The DoSeum is a place where interactive fun and hands-on learning come together. The DoSeum offers exhibits, programs, camps, classes, and field trips designed for all learners, encouraging young minds to explore the joy of learning through connections to STEM, the arts, and literacy. Originally founded in 1995 as San Antonio Children’s Museum, The DoSeum has grown to become a premier leader in informal education, while still staying true to the mission of connecting families and transforming communities.
We have worked with The DoSeum on a variety of projects over the years but all of have been focused on people! We were first approached by The DoSeum to facilitate a board roles and responsibilities training session. The Cielo Strategy team worked with the chief executive and board leadership to develop an annual board training focused on governance and engagement. That session led to working with the board on identifying strategic priorities during an executive transition in an effort to minimize the impact on the staff.
During that transition, we also worked to ensure the staff team was strong by facilitating a series of in-service sessions with The DoSeum’s mid-level managers. Each session was 2-2.5 hours and topics covered included:
- A Secret to Team Effectiveness: Communication
- The Power of the Team
- Trust and Accountability
- Managers and Coaches: What Role to Play and When
Once the new CEO was hired, we were asked to provide all staff training on effective communication styles and incorporated activities that were interactive and cross-departmental.
Our most recent project with The DoSeum focused on people was conducting a comprehensive salary review for the entire staffing team. The Cielo Strategy team reviewed every job description for every position and compared the DoSeum’s salary ranges against similar positions nationally, regionally, and locally. We reviewed the job descriptions and salary ranges against other museum positions as well as within the general nonprofit space. The final deliverable was a spreadsheet with all ranges, our recommendations for salary adjustments, and a possible timeline for bringing all salaries to current market rate.
